The image shows stylised symbols from the STEM subjects (e.g. microscope, test tubes, gears, circuit). Dates in the first half of 2026 are listed: 13 February at 4 p.m., 13 March at 4 p.m., 17 April at 5 p.m., 15 May at 5 p.m. and 12 June at 5 p.m. The logos of the Goethe-Institut, Studienbrücke and Universitätsallianz Ruhr are shown below. © Erin Mahon / UA Ruhr OEZA
The next lecture in the "Science in Focus" series is dedicated to another forward-looking STEM topic: plastics technology.

After exciting insights into mechanochemistry and power electronics, the third lecture in our series will focus on a material that shapes our everyday lives: plastics.

Plastics are everywhere today - from packaging and cars to aerospace. The lecture shows how modern mechanical engineering technologies and material sciences work together to specifically control their properties, enable versatile applications and make processes from shaping to recycling efficient and sustainable.

Speaker: Santiago Soares de Mendonça - Bachelor's student in mechanical engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen, who is planning his Bachelor's thesis in the field of design and plastics machinery in the winter semester 2026/27. He is also involved as a residence tutor at Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg.
