UA Ruhr STEM Camps Inspire Young Talents in Kazakhstan

On June 8 and 9 in Öskemen and on June 11 and 12 in Almaty, the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), in collaboration with the D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University (EKTU) and the German-Kazakh University (DKU). The events brought together high school students, college students, early-career researchers, and parents, offering hands-on insights into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Faculty, researchers, students, and alumni from Ruhr University Bochum, Dortmund Technical University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen designed a varied program featuring lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions. The focus was on computer science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, robotics, biotechnology, water sciences, and other forward-looking STEM subjects. Participants also received information on study and research opportunities in Germany and Kazakhstan.

Highlights included hands-on workshops—such as soldering their own game consoles—as well as visits to EKTU’s state-of-the-art research centers in the fields of materials science, water technologies, and gamification.

Beyond fostering the next generation of scientists, the STEM camps strengthened cooperation between the universities of the UA Ruhr and their Kazakhstani partner institutions. They provided a platform for academic exchange, networking, and the planning of future joint projects. The warm hospitality of the hosts, along with coverage in the Kazakh media and the attention from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, underscore the importance of the initiative for German-Kazakh higher education cooperation.
