Scientific Bridges to Ukraine
DniProNRW – Science Bridge
As the war in Ukraine—and particularly in the Dnipro region—continues to escalate, the three universities of the Ruhr University Alliance are further expanding their collaboration with Ukrainian partner universities. Through the DniProNRW project, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW) – Science Bridge, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW), Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen are combining concrete support for scientific infrastructure with long-term collaborations in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer.
The project is developed and coordinated by the UA Ruhr’s Liaison Office for Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the South Caucasus (EECA) at Ruhr University Bochum; on the Ukrainian side, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University serves as the coordinating institution.
Three strands link science and reconstruction
Transfer and Innovation
The Transfer and Innovation sector focuses on knowledge and technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and collaboration between academia, industry, and other stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem. The goal is to exchange experiences and expertise, strengthen existing structures, and develop concrete points of contact for future cooperation between the Dnipro region and the Ruhr region. One example of this was the visit by a delegation from Dnipro in August, during which the Ukrainian partners got to know all three UA-Ruhr universities as well as numerous stakeholders in the regional innovation ecosystem.
Water Research
The Water Research track brings together scientific expertise and collaborative efforts centered on a resource that is of central importance to the Dnipro region both today and with a view to future reconstruction. Given the stresses and challenges caused by the war, there is a particular focus on improving water quality and the restoration of water bodies. In addition, the initiative addresses the management of contaminated sites and the development of approaches that will contribute to sustainable and resilient water management in the region over the long term.
German Studies
In the field of German studies, existing scholarly and academic relationships are being strengthened, joint teaching and exchange programs are being further developed, and Ukrainian and German scholars are being connected with one another.
