Germany and Kazakhstan are strengthening their strategic partnership. Ruhr University Bochum is contributing through new collaborations in research, education, and industrial innovation.

The strategic partnership between Germany and Kazakhstan is to be further expanded in the fields of science and higher education. On September 29, 2026, representatives from the worlds of science, politics, and business gathered in Berlin on the occasion of Kazakh President Kassym-Shomart Tokayev’s official visit to Germany.

For Ruhr University Bochum and the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), the event provided an opportunity to further develop existing relationships with Kazakh partners and to launch new collaborations. RUB Chancellor Dr. Achim Dilling and Elena Resch, Head of the UA Ruhr Liaison Office for Eastern Europe/Central Asia/Southern Caucasus (EECA), participated in the discussions and the signing ceremony.

Together with the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the German-Kazakh University (DKU), and the industry partner Kazzinc, several cooperation agreements and letters of intent were signed.

The planned collaborations include, among other things, joint research and academic exchange, the training of qualified professionals, industrial innovation, and cooperation between universities and companies. One special initiative is the establishment of a permanent scientific presence for the UA Ruhr in Almaty. Together with the National Academy of Sciences and the German-Kazakh University, this presence is intended to promote networking among researchers and facilitate new collaborations in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

In addition, RUB is developing the “K’ADAM International – Engineering, Research & Innovation Track” program in collaboration with East Kazakhstan Technical University and Kazzinc, which combines academic training with international experience and industrial practice.

With these new agreements, the UA Ruhr is further expanding its long-standing relationships with Kazakhstan and creating new opportunities for students, researchers, and the transfer of knowledge between academia and industry. The UA Ruhr Liaison Office EECA supports networking and the further expansion of local collaborations.
